Of Beetles and Angels

If you had to flee America today with your immediate family, several suitcases, and $100, where would you go? How would you get there? What would be your biggest challenges once you got there?

Students Only

Hello All Lit Scholars,
Please read the entry titled what is blogging. After you read the entry you should have a better understanding of what you are to do as you respond to each blog. You need to make sure you are responding under the correct blog conversation. Read the other post first before you respond then reflect upon the conversation. Have fun

What is Blogging

What is blogging?
A blog ("web log") is an online diary or journal. It is a web page that can be used for instant online publishing by opinion writers, part-time poets, critics or boosters and by family and friends, educators, clubs or businesses.
The blog site creates opportunities to exchange ideas, share timely news, record events, update projects, show pictures or post writings similar to a diary or journal. Additional information can be made available through links posted on the blog site.
Readers on the web respond to the blogger through comments on the blog page.
Blogging can be used either for play or for work, and can be compared to instant messages. Some of the time you will see random free thoughts or notes that someone has posted in order to make a statement, other times a blog might just be a series of funny musings. People use blogging for work, project posting, file sharing, related links, schedules as well as an exchange of ideas on how to get something done. Families can use it to share personal news, and educators for class discussion groups.

Posting Commnets

Hello All Literacy Scholars,
Post your comment to Beetles and Angels under that section.

Parental Concern

Parents,
As a parent and a member of our crazy world! I understand some of you may wonder why we are communicating electronically. I have found this is the best way to communicate with students and parents after the school doors have closed and students and parents still have questions. If your scholar does not have an email account they may use yours. I totally understand if you may be reluctant just yet for a personal scholar email. Please handle this situation appropriately for your family. We discuss daily the safety involved in internet usage. I have taken safety measures to assure privacy for our classroom discussions as well as to make sure we do not get any outside advertising. What you see on our blog is what I have put there (Barnes & Noble for example) What is on our webpage is what I put there. The only people who have access are our students unless someone is bored enough to want to read about our wonderful EBS Literacy happenings. If you have further suggestions please email rather than post. I look forward to a great Literacy year with you and your Scholars!!

Viewing Sites

Ok Relieving Frustration

Using Site

Remember when you want to start a conversation make sure you are posting it to the correct conversation. We want to all hear what you have to say. In addition, if you know fellow classmates who still have not joined in on the conversation email them and tell them to join in.

Of Beetles and Angels

Imagine you were just as Mawi in the book Of Beetls and Angels:
Take a position as someone coming to this country from somewhere else:

* What emotions might you feel?
* What would you most look forward to?
* What might you miss the most?

Let's talk thru the blog about what we think

You may respond to anyones post remember each of us have the right to our own opinion

Log In Instructions for Parents/Students

Here are the steps that I have gone thru to get this working for our family. Mrs. Ligon asked that I post this as a "how-to" for everyone. The site is a little misleading, but it is pretty simple to do. From the blog click "Create Blog" in the upper right hand corner. This will open a page to create a google account. Fill out the information on this page and hit continue. The next step asks you to name your blog, but since you don't want to create a blog you can stop here. Now go back to the blog and you should be logged in. Click sign-in if you're not automatically logged in. Once you are connected I recommend visiting the Dashboard (upper right corner) and editing the profile. Personally, I like to insure there is no personal information and I like to change the display name for my child. Dashboard link - http://www.blogger.com/homeWhen I set this up for other users I had to go to their email and click a link from google to activate the account. However, I did not have to do this for my wife. I hope this helps. You can email me via the class contact list if you have any problems and I'll try to help.

Techy, Techy, Techy,
have a great night.

Textbook Weight

Parents yesterday was an exception to the rule day.  Rarely do students take both text books home however, it does occasionally happen.
Regarding the Social Studies we have a solution.  You may see Ms. Bailey, to check out a  CD which contains the textbook. The cost of the CD should it get lost is $25.

We hope this will help with the weight of the textbook. Please pass the word to any of our 5th grade penguins.  Ms. Bailey will have a designated time to check out the CD more than likely after school is out.
Have a great evening.

Register for Blog Site

Parents I will go further into the purpose of the blog site during open house. However, I encourage you and the students to register for the blog as it will become a major form of communication during our technology age. I am new to this as are some of you and I set the blog up relatively easy and registering is just as easy. I look forward to a great literacy year with each of you. I will also be posting our back to school letter to get a feel for how many of you are logging on and using the site. Have a great weekend.
Mrs. Ligon

About Me

My photo
“True Power comes from focusing on what we can give, not just on what we can take. Of the gifts that we can give, the greatest is to see beauty in each other - in essence, to Give beauty to each other. When we give the beauty, we prepare our hearts to receive it back.
